Scam Autopsy
Keep this by the telephone
The Universal Tells
Four signs that repeat in every scam we have taken apart on the table. If you can hear one of them, stop. You do not need to work out the rest of the story.
- 1
It arrives with an instruction to tell nobody.
No real court, bank, lawyer or government office ever asks you to keep a money emergency secret from your own family.
- 2
Real emergencies survive a phone call. Fake ones cannot.
Hang up. Call someone you trust on a number you already know. Then decide.
- 3
The payment method is the confession.
Gift cards, cash handed to a courier, cash in the post, wire transfers to strangers, cryptocurrency. Nobody legitimate is ever paid this way.
- 4
The stranger will not leave, and will not let you hang up.
A wrong number that stays to chat. A caller who keeps you on the line from shop to shop. Real institutions let you go and call them back.
